Mercer Island unveiled its first electric car charging station on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club.

Those cutting the ribbon included Mark McIntyre of Rep. Jay Inslee’s office, Mercer Island mayor Bruce Bassett, city maintenance director James Mason, Councilman Mike Grady, and Stephanie Meyn, Western Washington Clean Cities program manager.

The charging station at PEAK is one of three on the Island, with the other two located at City Hall and the Community and Event Center.

Charging a Nissan Leaf at one of the new stations will cost roughly $2.50, enough to drive an estimated 80 to 100 miles. Initially, the charging will be offered free of cost.
