Cadet William Goodwin, son of Patrick and Carolyn Goodwin of Mercer Island, completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy.

Goodwin entered West Point on June 27 and has successfully completed six weeks of CBT. Also referred to as “Beast Barracks,” CBT is one of the most challenging events  cadets will encounter over the course of their four years at the academy.

The initial military training program provides cadets with basic skills to instill discipline, pride, cohesion, confidence and a high sense of duty to prepare them for entry into the Corps of Cadets. Areas of summer instruction include first aid, mountaineering, hand grenades, rifle marksmanship and nuclear, biological, and chemical training.

Goodwin began classes Aug. 15. The West Point curriculum offers 45 majors balancing physical sciences and engineering with humanities and social sciences leading to a Bachelor of Science degree.

Goodwin graduated from Mercer Island High School. He plans to graduate from West Point in 2015 and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Austin Bell of Mercer Island received a Bachelor of Arts in history from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., on June 11. Bell is the son of Scott Bell and Rebecca Bell-Wesley.

Alison Caditz, daughter of Bryan and Terry Caditz, and a student at Occidental College, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarship, English Teaching Assistantship, in Argentina.

Islander Nancy B. Greer has been named the Chief Operating Officer for the Jewish Federation. Greer will retain her present responsibilities as Chief Financial Officer while expanding her role to include management of overall operations of the Federation.

Greer joined the Federation a year and a half ago after spending over 25 years in the private sector as a CFO and a corporate treasurer. The Federation is launching a new fundraising model this fall, allowing donors to designate their contributions to specific areas of impact within the community. The Jewish Federation raises funds and makes grants to Jewish nonprofit organizations locally, in Israel and throughout the world.

Alan Fulp, executive vice president and chief lending officer of Core Business Bank in Bellevue, was named president of Bellevue Rotary Club.

Fulp has also served as chairman of the Bellevue Downtown Association and as a board member of the Mercer Island Schools Foundation.

The service club has 205 members and raises an average of $400,000 a year to support local non profits and several international projects.

Three Islanders have been appointed so far this year to state commissions by Governor Christine Gregoire. They include:

David Azose was appointed to a two-year term on the Real Estate Commission on Feb. 26.

James Kreig was appointed to a two-year term on the Emergency Medical/Trauma Care Steering Committee on March 10.

John Breese was appointed on July 1 to the Economic Development Commission, for a two-year term.
