After two weeks of training at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York, four members of the Cascade Canoe and Kayak Racing team helped the U.S. team beat team Canada for the title during the Lake Placid International Regatta. The event is the second largest annual regatta in the western hemisphere.
Team USA included members of the team that is based at the City of Renton Boathouse. Caleb Chuck and Michael Weyna, both from Mercer Island, competed at the event.
Chuck, a member of the class of 2013 at Mercer Island High School, earned a gold medal in the men’s juvenile C-4 500-meter finals, and had two C-2 silver medals in the 1,000-meter finals and the C-2 200-meter final. He finished fifth overall in the individual men’s juvenile C-1 1,000-meter race.
Weyna and Brynn Munday finished third in the men’s juvenile K-2 200-meter final, while he was also part of the winning men’s juvenile K-4 200-meter team and took first in the juvenile K-4 1,000-meter final.
Weyna, Chuck, along with Carlin Chuck and Natasha Diez will be competing in the National event in August that will be held in Atlanta. The team is coached by Dan Henderson at Cascade Canoe and Kayak.
