MI girls tennis dominates KingCo tournament

Mercer Island girls tennis won the 3A KingCo tournament Tuesday, May 12 at Mercer Island Country Club, with the Islanders taking home both the singles and doubles titles.

Mercer Island girls tennis won the 3A KingCo tournament Tuesday, May 12 at Mercer Island Country Club, with the Islanders taking home both the singles and doubles titles.

Freshman Grace Bethards won the singles bracket, beating Bellevue’s Ally Du in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Sarah Sweet finished third, while Kimia Preston finished seventh. With the top four qualifying for next week’s Sea-King tournament, Bethards and Sweet both advanced to districts.

Reigning state doubles champions Gabby and Lydia Venditti won the KingCo tournament doubles title, beating teammates Caroline Hamilton and Sammy Sweet in the tournament final. Both teams qualified for district competition, as did Miji Suhr and Claire Mansfield, who finished fourth. Catherine Seifert and Melanie Lee placed fifth, and will go to the district tournament as alternates.

Also competing at next week’s tournament will be Mercer Island’s boys tennis qualifiers. Brian Hou and Jake Bethards will compete in singles action, and the teams of Ben Elliott and Charlie Williams, Cameron Coe and Peter Williams, and Rafa Gonzalez-Posada and Christian Anderson will compete in the doubles bracket.

The 3A Sea-King district tournament will take place May 19-20 at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle.
