In a joint statement issued by Mercer Island community leaders on the morning of Jan. 3, it was reported that individuals trespassed onto the Islander Middle School (IMS) grounds earlier this week and scrawled antisemitic and racist symbols and phrases on numerous windows and exterior walls.
“This abhorrent act of hate is not only a violation of our community’s shared values, but an attack on the principles of inclusion, respect and safety that we work every day to uphold in our community. As School Superintendent, School Principals, City Manager and Chief of Police of Mercer Island, we condemn this hateful antisemitic and racist act,” the statement reads. The incident occurred late on the evening of Jan. 1.
Mercer Island School District (MISD) Superintendent Fred Rundle, IMS co-principals Mary Jo Budzius and Aaron Miller, City Manger Jessi Bon and Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) Chief Chris Sutter penned the statement.
MIPD officers documented the crime onsite on the morning of Jan. 3 and MISD staff began removing the graffiti. Police detectives are actively investigating the crime, according to a city social media post, and anyone with information is asked to contact MIPD. Along with reviewing the school security footage, the school district and police department are working collaboratively throughout the investigation process, the statement reads.
“We have been in contact with Amy Lavin at the Stroum Jewish Community Center, who has been a steadfast partner in the past and will again stand up against hate with us today,” according to the statement, which adds that MISD will work closely with the MIPD, school community and local leaders “to address the impact of this hateful act and strengthen our ongoing efforts to promote belonging and inclusion.”
When school resumes after winter break on Jan. 6, the district will provide additional support and resources to students and staff affected by the incident, the community leaders noted.
