MI wrestling fifth at Island Invitational

Islanders boast winners in three weight classes, with two taking home Outstanding Wrestler awards.

Mercer Island had six wrestlers compete at the Island Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday, Jan. 10 at Bainbridge High School. Taking on wrestlers from 12 other schools, the Islanders placed fifth overall as a team.

Mercer Island boasted winners in three weight classes. Taylan Yuasa won first place in the 120 division, while Scott Lee won at 138 and Evan Condon won at 195. Yuasa and Condon both took home Most Outstanding Wrestler awards, for best lightweight and heavyweight respectively. It was the second consecutive year both wrestlers won their divisions and earned Outstanding Wrestler awards at the tournament.

Other highlights for Mercer Island included Trevor Gullstad placing fourth in the 145 division and Nic Meinzinger-Richards placing fifth at 160. While competing but not officially scored, Russell Asmus placed sixth in the 195 class.

Next, the Islanders will travel to Juanita High School to take on the Rebels at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15.
