The Mercer Island Chinese Association (MICA), in collaboration with the city of Mercer Island, will host the inaugural Mid-Autumn Festival Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.
The festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is one of the most significant traditional holidays in Chinese culture, symbolizing reunion, gratitude, and the celebration of the harvest. While mooncakes are a beloved part of the festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival is about much more than just these tasty treats. It’s a time for families to come together, share stories, and appreciate the full moon, which symbolizes unity and togetherness.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature traditional Chinese music, dance and martial arts demonstrations; local students displaying their talents; interactive activities such as a tea ceremony, lacquered fan making, lantern making and face painting; carnival games; Chinese treats, including mooncakes, along with other traditional foods and treats that highlight the flavors of the season; and nonprofit booths showcasing their valuable community resources.
“We are thrilled to bring the Mid-Autumn Festival to Mercer Island and to provide a space where our community can come together to celebrate this important cultural event,” said Fan Yuan, president of MICA. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to share the beauty and traditions of Chinese culture with our neighbors while enjoying a fun-filled day at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.”
