MIHS band collects over 12,000 pounds of goods for local food banks

As a result of the incredible effort of the Mercer Island Marching Band students and directors — and thanks to the amazing generosity of the Mercer Island community — 12,748 pounds of nonperishable food were donated to local area food banks on Dec. 13.

As a result of the incredible effort of the Mercer Island Marching Band students and directors — and thanks to the amazing generosity of the Mercer Island community — 12,748 pounds of nonperishable food were donated to local area food banks on Dec. 13.

A total of 280 students, organized by instrument section, went door-to-door, as well as collecting outside Albertsons throughout the day. The six-plus tons of food collected during the band’s “Can-A-Thon” was then distributed to the MI Youth & Family Services food bank, as well as other local food bank programs.

The enthusiasm and commitment of the high school students in carrying out this community service project and the overwhelming support of Mercer Island families for those in need of food is a great testament to the high school band program and to the Mercer Island community.

Thanks, too, to several local businesses for their support, especially Albertsons and the Storage Court of Mercer Island.
