In May of 1962, 193 seniors graduated from Mercer Island High School.

The Seattle World’s Fair — the Century 21 Exposition — had opened a month earlier. That year John Glenn orbited the earth, the compact audio cassette was invented, the Beatles recorded their first hit “Love Me Do,” and a first-class stamp cost 4 cents.

Following the graduation ceremony, the class of ’62 rushed off to a graduation party on Blake Island that had been arranged by their parents. After the party, the classmates said goodbyes and scattered to their destinies.

On July 28, 90 members of the class of 1962 and 44 spouses gathered at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle for their 50th class reunion.

Charlie Burdell and Donna Palmer Miles led the reunion committee in creating a truly memorable celebration. During the cocktail hour, friendships were renewed as if they had not been interrupted by 50 years.

A special display of photographs honored the 30 members of the class who have died.

Sue Bird Brodie and John Green were co-emcees during dinner, recalling and evoking memories from the class of 1962. Recollections of teachers, old flames and sports conquests were shared with just a little embellishment. There were also a few confessions.

The evening continued with music from the ’60s, dancing and more socializing.

For a few hours on Saturday evening, time lost its dimension. The year 1962 was in century 21. Had 50 years really passed? How had we grown so old? How had we stayed so young?
