Mercer Island High School students performed exceedingly well on state-mandated tests that measure student learning for math, reading, writing and science.

The tests, called Measurements of Student Progress (MSP), for grades 3 through 8, and the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) indicate that the vast majority of Mercer Island School District students continue to meet or exceed standards for high school learning.

Looking at the percentage of 10th grade students at or above standard at Mercer Island High School, the numbers have improved dramatically in two areas: writing and science since 2002. The percentage of students who met standards for science at 68 percent in 2002-03 jumped to 86 percent in 2010-11. Writing scores for sophomores also jumped from 83 percent in 2002-03 to 95 percent in 2010-11. The number of students at or above standard for math fell to 81 percent after a high of 86 percent in 2007-08. The number of those meeting standards in reading fell slightly to 94 percent last year after reaching 97 percent in 2005-06.

The percentage of students statewide who met or exceeded standards this past year were: reading, 82%; math, 42%; writing, 86%; and science, 50%.
