Mercer Island volleyball bests Interlake

After earning wins against Metro squads Eastside Catholic and Seattle Prep last week, Mercer Island volleyball improved to 3-0 last night with a win over Interlake at MIHS.

The Islanders and Saints split the first two match sets before Mercer Island took the final two, winning 25-22 and 25-17. Kelly Behrbaum had 14 kills and two aces for the Islanders, while Caroline Hamilton contributed nine kills, four digs and four aces and Tess Hendelman posted nine kills, three digs and an ace.

Mercer Island will host its fourth match of a six-game homestand against Lake Washington at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17 at MIHS.

Boys water polo wins over Newport

Coming off of nonconference wins over Auburn-Riverside and Curtis High School, Mercer Island boys water polo also improved to 3-0 with its 13-7 win over Newport Monday at Newport High School.

Mercer Island grabbed an early advantage against the Knights, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the opening period and never let up. Jack Larkin led the Islanders in scoring with five goals, while Hunter Peshkin had five saves in goal.

The Islanders will take on Roosevelt at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Mercer Island Country Club.
