MIPD assists with Bellevue incident involving explosive devices

Mercer Island Police Department officers assisted Bellevue Police Department’s crew with an incident involving explosive devices, eluding police and more on Oct. 12.

Bellevue officers arrested a middle-aged male suspect driver that afternoon in the incident that began at approximately 10:36 a.m. in the 3500 block of 108th Avenue in Bellevue with a vehicle chase and ended in a foot pursuit near Interstate 90 and East Mercer Way, according to police reports.

The driver of the black Mercedes sedan — which was previously reported stolen — was taken into custody for possession of an explosive device, multiple counts of assault one, driving under the influence, possession of stolen vehicle and eluding law enforcement. The passenger, also a middle-aged male, was arrested for previously existing felony warrants.

Both directions of I-90 were closed in the area where the incident occurred and were reopened at about 3 p.m.

The incident throughout some Bellevue streets and onto I-90 also involved the deployment of spikes to puncture all four tires of the suspect vehicle and a PIT maneuver (precision immobilization technique) by Washington State Patrol troopers.

A Bellevue police report described the explosive device situation: “As officers approached the suspect (driver), he turned toward them and revealed to have a blow torch and an explosive device in his possession. It was then when the suspect attempted to light the device, prompting Bellevue officers to use force by tackling him to the ground.”
