Drivers are being warned of possible late evening and early morning congestion this weekend in Bellevue when northbound I-405is reduced to a single lane while construction crews demolish and replace dozens of concrete panels on the roadway.
The three left lanes between Southeast Eighth Street and State Route 520 will be closed overnight on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20.
The lanes close nightly at 10 p.m. By 6 a.m. each day, one of the closed lanes will reopen, with all lanes open by 9 a.m. The northbound HOV exit to Northeast Sixth Street will be closed on Friday, July 19 from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, July 20. It will be open on Saturday night. The Northeast Sixth Street HOV on-ramp to northbound I-405 will be closed both nights from 10 p.m. until 9 a.m.
During the closure, the construction crews will break up and remove nearly three dozen panels which are approaching 50 years old and at the end of their lifespan. The work is part of the I-405 concrete replacement and rehabilitation project. The project will replace more than 900 panels on northbound I-405 through Bellevue. Bumpy sections that are not being replaced will be ground down to improve the ride.
During a weekend closure on July 13-14, more than 500 panels were replaced, giving drivers a smoother ride. A second weekend-long closure of all northbound lanes is scheduled for Aug. 10-11.
