A new Quiznos sub shop is now open in the Town Center at 7650 S.E. 27th St.

“It’s been great,” said co-owner Irene Barber of business since opening day on April 6. “The reception on this Island is absolutely awesome. The people would stop us on the street and give us a thumbs up.”

Barber co-owns the franchise, purchased 4 1/2 years ago, with her husband, Greg. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday. Quiznos can be reached at 275-3464.

United Studios of Self Defense

A new martial arts center, United Studios of Self Defense, opened on April 13 in downtown Mercer Island. The studio began offering private and group instruction last week in shoalin chuan fa, comprised of karate and kung-fu, for people of all ages. Free evaluation programs are available. USSD headquarters is based in Lake Forest, Calif.

“Everyone seems to be excited with the new place,” said owner Alex Deanda, who described the studio as a “place to share the magic of the martial arts.”

Hours are 12-9 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday; and 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday.
