Entrepreneurs are emerging on Mercer Island, as three new businesses open or are about to open.

Yo Mercer on the South end of the Island at 8435 S.E. 68th St., Suite 100, is proving to be quite the hit with the after-school crowd since it opened June 7.

Owned by Karen and Gary Sherman, it is not a franchise — it is a family operation. The concept is completely self-serve frozen yogurt, with dozens of toppings ranging from fresh fruit and nuts to candy delights.

The price of 44 cents per ounce includes the toppings — basically everything you put into your cup.

“We have non-fat and low-fat options, plus a non-sugar yogurt for diabetics,” said Gary Sherman, who added that everything is kosher.

Flavors change daily, but vanilla, chocolate and original tart are always available out of the 80 flavors they have.

Sherman said they are in the old Curves location. Their hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday.

He hired 14 part-time employees, all local.

The Chevron station at 77th and Sunset, owned by brothers David and Marty Ulrich, is adding a Chevron Extra Mile store to the station, a half-million dollar project.

David Ulrich will manage the store and gas while Marty Ulrich will run the auto servicing business.

The addition to the building is being constructed by Evergreen Environmental of Mill Creek.

David Ulrich said that the Chevron Extra Mile chain keeps everything new and fresh, discarding cooked, unpurchased food after two hours.

The store will carry Van Houtte coffee, brats, hot dogs, corn dogs, an icy machine, beer, micro-brews, wine, energy drinks and maybe even Top Pot donuts.

The Extra Mile store will open July 11, with a grand opening planned for September.

The Ulrichs have owned the station since 1981. David Ulrich said there are 600 Chevron Extra Mile stores on the West Coast. This will be the first for Mercer Island.

Just around the corner from the Chevron station, a new salon, Indulge, opened June 1.

Owner Tina Gray and her two associates have worked on the Island for many years. The three worked together at Expressions Salon and Spa before it closed last year.

Gray’s speciality is full-service hair, while Julie Ulrich does manicures, pedicures and waxing.

Judy Frounfelter is a massage therapist who also does pedicures.
