Mercer Island will be a greener place to live with the opening of E-Recycle, a new service designed to help you get rid of your electronic waste.

Brothers and co-owners Steve and Tony Lee opened the business located at 7835 S.E. 30th on Nov. 1.

Steve Lee said he is supporting the green movement.

“No one on the Island had done this before,” he said. “I’m trying to reduce our carbon footprint.”

He said he has seen old computer monitors dumped along roadways. E-Recycle is a much better alternative.

The brothers will take just about anything, including computers — both laptop and desktop — monitors, televisions, printers, copiers, cell-phones, scanners, fax machines and VCR/DVD players. The business is certified with the State Ecology Department. Electronic equipment that cannot be refurbished for sale is bundled and picked up by the manufacturer. None of the e-waste is shipped overseas.

Old computers that can be refurbished can be re-sold for as low as $50.

If you don’t have the time or ability to wipe out your hard drive, the Lees can totally wipe it out.

“It’s illegal to go into other people’s hard drives,” he said.

Steve Lee was previously in the oil business, and his brother, Tony, is also a realtor.
