Preliminary results for the November general election, featuring five races for the City Council and three for the School Board, are in.
Preliminary results posted at 8:15 p.m. on election night showed that less than 30 percent of Islanders had voted. That number climbed to about 46 percent after more ballots were counted, though results are relatively unchanged. Incumbent mayor Bruce Bassett is leading the race for Position No. 5 on the City Council with 55 percent of the vote, to challenger Thomas Acker’s 45 percent.
Dave Wisenteiner is edging incumbent Jane Meyer Brahm in the race for Position No. 1, about 53 percent to 47 percent.
Wendy Weiker has 54 percent of the votes for the open seat left by Mike Cero, Position No. 3. Salim Nice has 46 percent.
Jeff Sanderson, running for the two-year term vacated by Tana Senn then Joel Wachs for Position No. 4, captured 93 percent of the votes. His opponent, Carl Silverberg, withdrew early and endorsed Sanderson for the seat, but still earned 6 percent.
Incumbent Debbie Bertlin is leading the race for Position No. 7 on the Council with about 56 percent of the votes, followed by Traci Granbois with 44 percent.
Brahm, Bassett, Weiker and Bertlin were advocating a regionally collaborative approach to issues like population growth accommodation and transit throughout the campaign season, while Wisenteiner, Nice and Acker promised to “fight for the Island” and push for responsible – in other words, less – growth and density. Granbois’s campaign focused on improving transparency in City Hall.
Tracy Drinkwater leads the race for the School Board Position No. 3, receiving about 60 percent of the votes, followed by Bill Hochberg with 40 percent.
In the uncontested races for Position No. 1 and Position No. 5, David D’Souza and Ralph Jorgenson got 99.21 percent and 99.28 percent of the votes, respectively.
A total of 5,035 ballots had been counted on election night, out of 17,444 registered voters in Mercer Island, or about 28.86 percent. That went up to 36.68 percent, or about 6,399 ballots counted, on Nov. 4 and 46.08 percent, or about 8,038 ballots counted, on Nov. 6.
