NYHS journalism honors

Joelle Keene, president and executive director of the Jewish Scholastic Press Association, visited Northwest Yeshiva High School (NYHS) on Aug. 29 to present a pair of awards to local students in the Emily Alhadeff-taught journalism department. Students received awards for their feature stories in the high school newspaper, The Mane Idea. Jenna Kaufthal, a recent NYHS graduate, won first place in a tie with Shalhevet High School in the category of “News and feature reporting on current events involving Israel.” The article, titled “Answering the Call to Defend Israel,” was featured by The Mane Idea in December of 2023. Elianna Rothstein, now an NYHS senior, won second place in the category of “News or feature reporting on interreligious or intercultural activism or events” for her December 2023 piece titled, “Mercer Island Muslim and Jewish leaders work together against hate.” Photo courtesy of Zelle Rettman
