Staff Report
Mercer Island police officers wrestled a disturbed man to the ground as he headed toward the Interstate 90 railing in the 8000 block of North Mercer Way at about 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 8, according to a police report.
The 33-year-old man was uninjured and was placed into an awaiting ambulance. An officer sustained minor injuries during the incident.
Officers and firefighters were called to the scene when the man contacted 911 asking for help. When officers arrived, they found him to be in crisis and delusional.
Initially, officers and firefighters tried to get the man into an ambulance and to the hospital for evaluation, but he made several threats to jump over the railing onto I-90 during the interaction. At one point, the man broke free and moved toward the railing.
Police later discovered that Bellevue police dealt with the same man the previous day and he was released from the hospital a few hours before Mercer Island officers contacted him.
