Police and court documents obtained last week show that a former Islander suspected of killing his wife and himself in Virginia late last month had been in trouble with Mercer Island police in the past.
The Mercer Island School District will extend its Math Curriculum and Program Review until Friday, Oct. 10. The review, which includes an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com, has been going on for several weeks. The district’s goal is to evaluate the current math program based on newly adopted standards, school district and national assessment data, as well as teacher, parent and student survey information. A committee of administrators, teachers and parents will use the information to evaluate the district’s math program. Consultant Tom Bates of BLRB Architects presented the School Board with a visual survey of the repairs needed at all five district schools, along with the North Mercer campus and administration building, as the 2009 facilities bond project moves slowly ahead.
Islanders should expect a close race for the open House seat of the 41st Legislative District this fall, as Republicans are seeking to reclaim the seat being vacated by a former party member. Edward E. Maloof of Mercer Island died Sept. 30 at Swedish Hospital with his family at his side. Through his civic involvement, real estate and teaching careers, Mr. Maloof was a key part of Island life for more than 60 years.
