Most 3A KingCo high school tennis seasons come down to Mercer Island and Newport. The rest of the teams play for third or fourth place. This year, the only team left of those two schools in 3A KingCo after realignment is Mercer Island.
If a girls soccer player made it through the entire season in 2007 without injury, she was in the minority. Eleven out of 18 players missed time last year due to torn ACLs, twisted ankles and a litany of other ailments that made the team look like a traveling emergency room. The result was a frustrating season that saw Mercer Island miss the playoffs and slide to the bottom of the division with just five wins.
Cross country is a sport that is thought of, primarily, as an individual sport. Running tests one’s endurance, speed and mental fortitude. But the emphasis on team at Mercer Island High School has led the girls squad to be a perennial state contender and the boys to push their way to the top.
The Mercer Island High School football team went through some big changes during the offseason. A new head coach, realignment of the KingCo league and some dramatic changes on the field resulted in the Islanders’ first win of the season, 7-6, on Friday against Lake Washington.
The Mercer Island High School radio station has a new home. For the past four years, KMIH had been teetering on the edge of its FM wavelength, 104.5, nearly pushed off by a bigger Oregon station vying for the same dial number. Because the high school-run radio station was considered a “Class D” educational station, KMIH did not have the commercial clout to defend its long-standing home in the face of competition. And so Nick DeVogel, director of the MIHS radio station, turned to professionals for help.

A derelict, mid-Island property along West Mercer Way slated to be demolished by the city has been purchased. It will be fixed or torn down by a new owner. If it had not sold, it would have been the first time in more than twenty years of that a private home was to be taken over and demolished by the city.
Several pieces of jewelry were stolen from a home in the 6100 block of West Mercer Way on the morning of Sept. 3. According to the police report, the homeowner left around 9:30 a.m. and returned two and a half hours later only to find her front door left open by a burglar who had smashed a side-door window to get into her house.

Three men were arrested in the Town Center early Saturday morning on suspicion of carjacking. The men were apprehended following a car chase that began in Seattle.
Ten Seattle-area Jewish nonprofits, including Northwest Yeshiva High School on Mercer Island, have been awarded over $295,000 from the Department of Homeland Security. The agency’s Urban Areas Security Initiative Nonprofit Security Grant program will enable the organizations to do as much as they can in the coming year to shore up their emergency and security systems.
