Republican candidate and Mercer Island resident, Valerie Chan, withdrew from the state Senate race for the 41st Legislative District on Thursday, June 12. Chan said she withdrew for family reasons. Three Islanders had filed to run for the vacant Senate position during the official candidate filing period earlier this month. Chan and Bob Baker had filed as Republicans while four-term state representative Fred Jarret is running as a Democrat. Senator Brian Weinstein announced last December that he would not seek a second term and would return to practicing law. With just two candidates on the ballot, there will no longer be a primary for this contest.
