The Mercer Island City Council took the step at its April 22 meeting to rename the Park on the Lid as Aubrey Davis Park. The change is to recognize the key role that Davis had in limiting the size and impact of the expansion of I-90 across the Island in the 1970s.
Davis, who died on Feb. 17, was a City Councilman and former mayor of Mercer Island. He and others led a multiyear effort to force state transportation officials to redesign the expansion.
After years, the state finally agreed to limit the number of lanes that cross the Island and cover the western end of the project. The plan was changed to construct a nearly one-half mile long concrete lid, which was landscaped and turned into a park with soccer fields, ball fields, tennis courts and open space.
A public memorial service for Mr. Davis is set for 10:29 a.m., May 18, at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle.
