Mercer Island police have apprehended two suspects believed to be responsible for a series of mail thefts on the Island.

At 2 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, officers responded to a call of a male and female suspect breaking into locked boxes at the Clarice Apartments, 2800 75th Pl. S.E.  The caller who reported the incident had the suspect’s vehicle blocked in with his own vehicle, preventing the suspects from leaving as officers were en route.   The suspects rammed the caller’s vehicle and fled the area as officers were arriving.  A female suspect was immediately taken into custody.

As police attempted to take the male suspect into custody, one of the officers was knocked to the ground and sustained a minor head injury. He was transported to the hospital and later released.

The male suspect escaped on foot. Two hours later, at 4:15 a.m. Washington State Patrol Troopers located the male suspect walking across the I-90 bridge. Troopers attempted to contact him when he jumped into Lake Washington.  Seattle Harbor Patrol responded, located the suspect and pulled him from the water at 4:45 a.m.  He was transported to the hospital to be treated for exposure.

The male suspect has several active felony warrants and both suspects will be booked on multiple felony charges.  Investigators are working with the U.S. Postal Service and other local agencies.  A bundle of stolen mail was found in the vehicle and investigators will be contacting the owners of the property.

Both suspects were in their late 20s and early 30s. They were not residents of Mercer Island.
