30 BUI arrests over Seafair weekend

Seafair weekend brings boats, sunshine and its share of drunks. Every year the Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) teams up with Washington State Patrol, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Seattle Police Department and the King County Sheriff’s Office.

There were a total of 30 BUI arrests over the weekend and one arrest by the MIPD. Commander Leslie Burns said arrests were down significantly from past years, and were less than half of the number of last year’s BUI arrests.

“Our officers on the boats found that a large majority of the boats had designated boat operators and/or operators who were drinking minimally early in the day and quit before the afternoon,” explained Burns.

MONDAY | 28

ACCIDENT: Around 1:05 p.m. on Monday, Mercer Island police were dispatched to the 3200 block of 73rd Ave. S.E. Upon arrival, an officer observed a red SUV facing westbound with passenger rear bumper damage and a southbound facing truck with passenger side damage to the front portion of the truck bed. The driver of the red SUV said he backed out of his garage without looking because there isn’t usually a car parked on the street.

MALICIOUS MISCHIEF: The driver’s side of a blue Mercedes Benz was spray-painted sometime between 10 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Monday night while parked in the Islander Middle School lot.

MALICIOUS MISCHIEF: Graffiti was reported in the Clarke beach parking lot.

ACCIDENT: A vehicle was headed southbound on West Mercer Way, attempting to make a left-turn onto 76th Ave. S.E. A second car was northbound on West Mercer Way when it collided with the first car, halfway through its turn.

ACCIDENT: A car headed southbound in the 5400 block of East Mercer Way was travelling above the speed limit, between 31 and 36 miles per hour (m.p.h.) in a zone posted for 25 m.p.h. The driver lost control of the wheel, crossed the center lane into oncoming traffic and collided with another car.

WARRANT ARREST: King County Jail advised Mercer Island police that they were about to release an adult male with an outstanding warrant through the Island police department. The subject was arrested and transported to Issaquah Jail.

FRAUD: A 39-year-old Island woman said she learned her personal information had been used to apply for unemployment insurance.

WARRANT ARREST: A 19-year-old Mercer Island man was pulled over and found to have a misdemeanor warrant in his name out of the Kirkland Police Department. He was cited, arrested and transported.

INFORMATIONAL REPORT: Someone lit a book on fire and left it in an Island woman’s mailbox in the 4600 block of 90th Ave. S.E. There was no damage to her property.

ACCIDENT: A vehicle was parked alongside the edge of the driveway at a construction site. A second car attempted to get through the narrow passage and while doing so collided with the passenger-side rear wheel. Witnesses observed contact between the vehicles.

FRAUD: Eighteen thousand dollars of fraudulent cashier’s checks were ordered, sent and cashed.

FRIDAY | 1

CAR PROWL: A 27-year-old Seattle woman reported her car prowled between 10:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Among the items stolen were a bottle of Chanel perfume, a Washington driver’s license and insurance papers, a Key Bank debit card and a black Michael Kors purse. The victim’s passenger-side window was shattered in the prowl. The victim’s debit card was later used at a Renton Fred Meyer.

SATURDAY | 2

MARINE: A vessel was stopped and the operator arrested for boating under the influence (BUI). The operator was booked into King County Jail.

MARINE: A vessel was stopped for having a drunk operator. A number of empty beer cans were found around the vessel. The operator refused a BAC at the Proctor Landing holding cell and was cited for doing so.

SUNDAY | 3

MALICIOUS MISCHIEF: An unknown suspect broke a Kenmore woman’s windshield and left a note on an Albertson’s receipt.

TRAFFIC OFFENSES: A vehicle parked illegally behind a boat trailer boxed in another trailer. The vehicle was ticketed and impounded.

MONDAY | 4

WARRANT ARREST: The driver of a stopped vehicle was found to have an arrest warrant in his name with the Redmond Police Department for driving with a suspended license. The subject was taken into custody.

THEFT: An Island man was notified by HSBC and Bank of America for unauthorized activity on his accounts. Somebody had accessed his accounts by accurately answering his security questions. The accounts were closed and a report for credit card fraud was filed.

FRAUD: A 62-year-old Island man’s personal information was compromised and a Bank of America checking account created online. The Island man said he received an email notification and realized something was wrong.
