Several pieces of jewelry were stolen from a home in the 6100 block of West Mercer Way on the morning of Sept. 3. According to the police report, the homeowner left around 9:30 a.m. and returned two and a half hours later only to find her front door left open by a burglar who had smashed a side-door window to get into her house.

Burglary

According to the police report, the homeowner left around 9:30 a.m. and returned two and a half hours later only to find her front door left open by a burglar who had smashed a side-door window to get into her house.

In a nearby incident the night before, a house alarm went off and a homeowner in the 6700 block of West Mercer Way had found that the front door was damaged in an apparent burglary attempt. According to the police report, officers responded to a house alarm around 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 2 but did not find any signs that the home had been entered. The homeowner, however, found that there was damage to his alarm switch, and the front door had split wood.

Four rings were stolen from a home in the 4100 block of 93rd Avenue S.E. in the early afternoon of Aug. 30. According to the police report, the 83-year-old homeowner locked her front door when she left around 1:30 p.m., but when she returned an hour later she found the door wide open. Police suspect that the burglar entered through a rear sliding door that was left unlocked when the homeowner went out. The stolen jewelry is worth an estimated $1,850.

A laptop computer and several pieces of jewelry were stolen from a home in the 6300 block of S.E. 22nd Street on the evening of Aug. 29. According to the police report, the burglar broke a window on the first floor to gain entry to the home.

Arrests

A 43-year-old transient man was arrested during the night of Sept. 2 for having an outstanding warrant after trying to check into Tent City, which is located at the United Methodist Church on the corner of S.E. 24th Street and 71st Avenue S.E. According to the police report, camp security personnel ran a warrant check on the subject while he was checking in around 10 p.m. and determined that he was wanted by Seattle police for violating the controlled substance act.

A 19-year-old Islander working for the South end Chevron station was arrested for possessing marijuana around 6:15 p.m. on Aug. 28. According to the police report, a report came in that a gas station employee had just purchased more than a half ounce of marijuana and placed it in his car. The Bellevue drug-sniffing dog was called in and indicated that narcotics were in the vehicle. The young man was arrested, processed at the station and released to his parents.

Auto accidents

A collision occurred in the North Mercer Park and Ride around 10:30 a.m., Sept. 2. According to the police report, a 21-year-old Islander was searching for a parking spot when she accidentally T-boned a Seattle man heading toward the exit.

Police towed away a jeep parked outside the Shorewood Heights Apartments after a passerby noticed gas was leaking from its tank all over the asphalt around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 31. Officers discovered that the tank was ruptured and they could not locate the registered owner, so the dangerous vehicle was towed.

A three-car accident occurred in a parking lot of the Shorewood Heights Apartments on the night of Aug. 30 after a teenager from Bothell panicked and drove a car into two parked vehicles.

A 43-year-old Islander who fell asleep at the wheel while traveling southbound on Island Crest Way around 9 a.m. on Aug. 30 struck a tree in the median near the intersection at S.E. 53rd Street.

Another Islander crashed her car into a tree in the 3200 block of 78th Avenue S.E. around 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 29. According to the police report, the 83-year-old driver said she was distracted by something on her left and apparently hit the edge of the curb of a center island, losing control of her vehicle and crashing into a tree on her right.

Car prowl

An iPod was stolen from a car parked outside of the Jewish Community Center on the afternoon of Aug. 31. According to the police, the 23-year-old victim had parked around noon to use the facility. When she returned four hours later, one of her car windows was smashed and her $925 MP3 player missing.

A purse containing numerous credit cards, a driver’s license, a prescription bottle with Vicodon pills, a digital camera and $100 cash was stolen from a car parked in the 2200 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. the afternoon of Aug. 29. A rock was thrown through a window of the vehicle for the prowler to gain entry.

Assault

A 15-year-old high school student was assaulted in a school bathroom the afternoon of Sept. 4.
