Police Blotter | Five Islanders report tax fraud

MIPD makes three warrant arrests and investigate thefts, graffiti and a hit-and-run collision.

March 19

Found property: Police found green vegetation material, suspected of being marijuana, a glass bong and a Vapor electronic cigarette in a black nylon bag at the 3400 block of 77th Place S.E. The illicit property was submitted for destruction.

March 30

Warrant arrest: MIPD received a report of a subject – a 50-year-old Tukwila woman – trespassing on private waterfront property. They contacted the subject, who had a confirmed warrant for theft out of the King County Sheriff’s Office in SeaTac. She was arrested and transported for a meetup at the 44th St/I-405 Denny’s.

Fraud: A 63-year-old Island man at the 3600 block of West Mercer Way said that he was notified by the H&R Block tax preparer that a tax return had been filed using his identification as the spouse of another and therefore his return had been rejected. He had completed all necessary steps to report the fraud.

Warrant arrest: A 25-year-old Bellevue woman was taken into custody at the 9600 block of S.E. 36th Street for a misdemeanor warrant from Tukwila PD. She was booked into SCORE Jail.

March 31

Malicious mischief: A 53-year-old Island man reported graffiti tagging at the sewage pump station and park at the 2200 block of 60th Avenue S.E.

Fraud: A 59-year-old Island woman’s credit card was used for $1,078.50 in fraudulent charges at Sam’s Club.

Fraud: A 56-year-old female and 59-year-old male at the 3000 block of 65th Place S.E. reported a fraudulent tax return, with a $100,000 refund.

April 1

Fraud: A 72-year-old Island man at the 6700 block of West Mercer Way reported that a fraudulent tax return was filed using his Social Security number.

Domestic: A 19-year-old Island male was arrested after a 41-year-old Island man who lives at the 9000 block of West Shorewood Drive called to report he was bleeding after being hit in the face. He was treated on scene by MIFD and agreed to go to the hospital for his injuries. The two had been arguing about waking up late for work.

Theft: A 77-year-old Island woman at the 2400 block of 76th Avenue S.E. discovered charges on her Wells Fargo Visa credit card that she didn’t make.

Fraud: A 54-year-old Island woman who lives at the 4000 block of 92nd Avenue S.E. said someone attempted to file a tax return with her information.

Fraud: A 58-year-old woman at the 7600 block of S.E. 34th Street said that her Social Security number was used in a fraudulent federal income tax return.

April 2

Theft: A 41-year-old Snoqualmie woman reported that her front license plate was stolen at the 8200 block of S.E. 72nd Street.

Theft: A 66-year-old man reported that his bicycle had been stolen from the Park and Ride on North Mercer Way.

Assault: A 52-year-old Island man driving a car and a 38-year-old Kirkland man on a bicycle got into a verbal argument over use of the roadway. The driver pushed the other man off his bicycle and down a small staircase from West Mercer Way onto private property. There was slight damage to the bicycle and motor vehicle, but no injuries were reported at the scene.

Missing person: An 85-year-old Island woman reported a 19-year-male missing from the 2000 block of 80th Avenue S.E.

April 4

Theft: About $970.91 in cosmetics was stolen from a business at the 3000 block of 78th Avenue S.E. Police are investigating a DVD containing surveillance video of a person of interest.

Warrant arrest: A 30-year-old Seattle man, who had been trespassed from Albertson’s, was taken into custody at the 7600 block of S.E. 29th Street for a Redmond PD warrant and transferred to Redmond’s custody.

Collision: Police were dispatched to the 8800 block of S.E. 78th Street after getting a report a duct-taped tree, a sign of a possible hit-and-run. After an area check, they found a car in a cul-de-sac near the scene that had tree bark in and hanging on its damaged front end. The owner of the vehicle said she had over-accelerated and collided with the tree. She called her insurance company but didn’t know it was her responsibility to contact the property owner or the police. Her infraction was sent to the Mercer Island Municipal Court for mailing.

April 5

Informational report: Police were called to the 2000 block of 80th Avenue S.E. for a disturbance. A 19-year-old Island male was having a medical emergency due to drugs. He was taken into protective custody and transported to Harborview.
