ACCIDENT: A witness saw a vehicle fail to stop for a stop sign at 80th Ave. S.E. and S.E. 28th St. A second car had already entered the intersection and collided with the first. The first car continued on to a stoplight at Island Crest Way. The witness told the driver about the incident and advised him to pull over. The driver instead fled the scene. The witness had taken down his license plate. When police traced the plate to a business, the driver claimed he didn’t stop because he thought there was no damage.

ACCIDENT : The driver of a car in the 9200 block of S.E. 46th Street said he was taking a box off the roof of his vehicle when the driver of another vehicle headed toward him, crossed the center lane and struck his left ankle. She pulled over when she heard him screaming. The driver of the first car declined aid but photo evidence revealed a scratch on his ankle.

FRAUD: A 62-year-old Mercer Island woman received a text message stating that she had used more data than she believed she had. She used a number she found online for Verizon, but it was a fake site and the software purchased gave access to her computer. The $900 transaction was stopped by her credit card company.

BURGLARY: An Island woman returned home to the 7300 block of S.E. 36th St. to find the back, glass door of the house had been shattered. The incident occurred sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Thursday. The unknown suspect(s) entered the house and stole a wooden box from Sri Lanka, a 24-inch gold chain, a Macbook Air and an iMac desktop computer, among other items.

BURGLARY: Sometime between 9:20 a.m. and 1:25 p.m., an unknown suspect broke the master bedroom window of a house in the 3600 block of 73rd Ave. S.E. The owner returned to find $200 in cash stolen from a dresser drawer as well as $300 in coins, an iPod and Apple iPad. Fingerprints were taken from the scene and photos were taken of the shattered window.

PROPERTY LOST: Sometime between May 23 and May 26, a 51-year-old Mercer Island man lost his Spanish pilot license. He needed to file a police report in order to get a new one.

MALICIOUS MISCHIEF: A 55-year-old Mercer Island woman is the full-time caretaker of a 95-year-old Mercer Island woman and reported the lock on the shed beside her client’s house was broken.

FRIDAY | 30

TRAFFIC OFFENSES: A 42-year-old California man was arrested for driving without a valid operators permit in 9600 block of 36th St. He admitted to initially being dishonest about his first name. The driving status of his permit was suspended and he was arrested and then released at the scene for speeding and failing to provide insurance.

SATURDAY | 31

WARRANT ARREST: At 7:30 on Saturday, a 46-year-old Tacoma man was contacted on Lake Washington near Bellevue by Marine Patrol. Police noticed that his vessel registration was expired. They investigated further and found two warrants in his name – one out of Port Townsend with $600 to his name and one out of Puyallup for $500, both for driving with a suspended license. The driver was booked into King County Jail on the warrants.

INFORMATIONAL REPORT: A woman from Portland, Ore. reported her suspicions to Mercer Island police and requested the welfare check on a Mercer Island woman. She believed her brother, who is in prison, was sending his girlfriend to take advantage of the 85-year-old woman. She couldn’t present any evidence of wrongdoing.

FRAUD: A 58-year-old Kirkland man reported his wallet stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked in the 1600 block of Roanoke Way. His stolen card was used multiple times for purchases of up to $3,500.

BURGLARY : A 64-year-old Mercer Island man in the 4100 block of 94th Ave. S.E., reported his bicycle missing from his garage. The reporting party said that he and his family were gone over the weekend, between May 21 and June 2. He was advised by a neighbor that his garage door was open May 25. The police investigated, saw nothing suspicious and closed the garage door. The homeowner said he was sure the garage door was closed when he left.

PROPERTY FOUND: A 26-year-old Seattle woman reported her stolen vehicle found at the Woodlake Condominiums. A tenant had located the owner’s information because it was parked in the tenant’s reserved parking space. Several possible items of evidence were located including bottles of soda, a bag of jewelry, tools and miscellaneous items.

WARRANT ARREST: Mercer Island police were notified of a warrant subject at Kent Municipal Court. The 53-year-old Kent man was arrested and booked into Issaquah Jail.

SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES: An 83-year-old man in the 3200 block of 72nd Pl. S.E. reported the hinges on a door to his house removed. There was no sign of forced entry and nothing had been taken.

THEFT: A 54-year-old Island man reported his wrist wallet stolen from Mercer Island Chiropractic. His wallet contained a temporary ID and cash.

WARRANT ARREST: A 23-year-old Bonney Lake woman was arrested and booked into SCORE on a Mercer Island warrant for driving with a suspended license. Bail was set at $1,000.

By the numbers: Island crime, mishaps for May

Each month, Mercer Island police report crime statistics and traffic offenses, comparing them against those from the same time the year before. There were 52 total serious offenses in the month of May, bringing the total for the year-to-date to 332. There was one robbery and one aggravated assault. Three simple assaults were reported and police noted seven burglaries. Theft and identity theft accounted for the highest rates of crime last month–25 and 13 respectfully. There were also two incidents of auto theft. Only the number of auto thefts in May of 2013 was slightly higher than this year’s caseload. There were three cases of auto theft in 2013. All other categories of crime saw a slight uptick.

Twenty-four arrests were made in May and one juvenile arrest. May of 2013 saw only 12 adult arrests. No juveniles were taken into custody. In addition, there were 1,568 calls for service, about 500 more than in 2013.

But traffic accidents dipped slightly–17, down from 20 in May of 2013. Still, there were 492 total traffic citations, more than double the 235 last year.
