Islanders report car prowling, theft, fraud and catfishing

September 19

Collision: A 54-year-old man driving a tall delivery box style truck was backing into the dirt driveway at a new home construction site at the 7400 block of S.E. 32nd Street. He struck a guide wire connecting two power poles and pulled it, causing one of the poles to shift slightly. Puget Sound Energy was contacted to assess the damage.

September 29

Warrant arrest: A Mercer Island police officer transported a 22-year-old male to Issaquah Jail, where he was booked into custody.

September 30

Arrest: A 28-year-old male was stopped for speeding at the 1800 block of West Mercer Way. He was arrested and booked into King County Jail on a warrant from the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Fraud: A 60-year-old Island man reported that a false tax return was filed in his name.

October 1

Theft: A 52-year-old male at the 9000 block of East Shorewood Drive reported that a black and white Ferrari bike was taken from a secure parking garage between July 28 and Sept. 5. The bike, estimated at $1,200, was locked and the cable was cut.

Fraud: A 71-year-old male at the 9300 block of S.E. 68th Street reported that someone attempted to open credit card accounts in his name. He stated it has happened three times in the last six months and each time it was denied, and that he currently has a fraud alert on his accounts.

October 2

Prowling: Two people were victims of prowling at the 2000 block of 84th Avenue S.E. A 62-year-old male reported that someone smashed his passenger side front window and stole his backpack. A 43-year-old female also reported that her window was smashed and her purse, which was covered by a towel, was stolen. Both were at the dog park. Witnesses reported seeing three males in a Nissan Altima looking suspicious before the prowls.

More prowling: A 44-year-old female reported that her vehicle was prowled while parked at the Community Center. Police said there was no sign of vehicle entry. The victim didn’t realize anything was stolen until the next day, when she called and said her tennis bag was missing.

October 3

Fraud: A 67-year-old female at the 4200 block of 94th Avenue S.E. reported that her credit card was used at a Fred Meyer in Kent for a $600 purchase.

October 4

Liquor violation: An 18-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and reckless endangerment at the 5300 block of Island Crest Way. He was throwing glass into the roadway. He was released into the custody of his parents.

Fraud: A 49-year-old female reported that she started an online relationship with a subject who said he was a lieutenant in the Navy. The relationship continued for four months. Three weeks ago, he asked her for her back information and he attempted to deposit five fraudulent U.S. Treasury checks. None of her funds were lost, but the bank closed her account.

October 5

Missing person: A 91-year-old male who lives at the 2700 block of 76th Avenue S.E. was reported missing. He has no major medical or mental health problems. He was entered as a missing person by NORCOM dispatch, and later returned home of his own accord.

Collision: An officer responded to a two-vehicle traffic accident at the 2900 block of 77th Avenue SE. A 53-year-old female was cited for driver inattention, as witnesses said they saw her drive into the rear of another vehicle as it was turning into a parking lot.

October 7

Domestic disturbance: A 28-year-old male was arrested and booked into King County Jail after arguing with a 24-year-old female and preventing her from leaving in her vehicle at the 7800 block of S.E. 27th Street.

Prowling: A 65-year-old female reported that her locked vehicle was entered with no signs of forced entry at the 8200 block of Avalon Drive. Her iPhone charging cord, valued at $15, was taken.

Burglary: A 45-year-old male reported that someone attempted to enter a home under construction at multiple points, causing damage to the glass doors and frames at the 4800 block of Forest Avenue S.E. for a loss of $15,000. Police took a Fred Meyer receipt, a plastic drill bit case, photos of damages and photos of shoe prints into evidence.

Property damage: A 70-year-old Island male reported that an unknown person scratched the paint on his vehicle at the 3200 block of Shorewood Drive. Approximate damage was $500.
