Auto accidents
A three-car accident occurred in the intersection of Island Crest Way and S.E. 63rd Street after a 17-year-old Islander rear-ended a car taking a right turn on 63rd, pushing the car into a tree on a traffic island around 12:30 p.m. on June 17. After hitting the tree, the rear-ended car also collided with a stopped car. According to the incident report, the young driver said she did not realize the car in front of her had slowed to take the turn when she collided with it.
A minor collision occurred in the 7400 block of S.E. 27th Street around 7:30 p.m. on June 16. According to the accident report, a 43-year-old Islander rolled her car into a parked car while she was vacating the parking spot in front of it.
A rear-end collision occurred at the I-90 eastbound on-ramp and Island Crest Way around 9:30 a.m. on June 17. Police cited a 65-year-old Islander for inattentive driving.
A hit and run occurred in the 8800 block of S.E. 45th Street around 3:30 p.m. on June 16. According to the accident report, the rear end of a car parked in its driveway was clipped by a passing car, which did not stop after the collision.
An 18-year-old Islander was run off the road while driving southbound in the 5300 block of East Mercer Way around 1:40 a.m. on June 16. According to the incident report, the young driver said a red SUV was driving northbound in the southbound lane when he steered his car out of the way into the ditch on the side of the road.
Child abuse
A counselor from Lakeridge Elementary School reported that a 9-year-old student had come to school on the morning of June 9 with visible bruises and said his mom had hurt him. The incident was also reported to Child Protective Services.
Fraud
A trio of women from Tacoma and Seattle — ages 27, 28 and 33 — are suspected of trying to cash two forged checks from a 78-year-old Islander at two Money Tree locations in Tacoma on June 15.
Thefts
A purse containing numerous credit cards, a driver’s license and a checkbook was stolen from the Mercerwood Shore Club between 1 and 2 p.m. on June 17. According to the incident report, a 52-year-old Islander left her purse in the pool area for about an hour but could not find it. She checked with staff who told her that they did not have it. The total loss was reported to be $142.
A bicycle wheel was stolen from an unlocked storage shed in the Shorewood Heights Apartments between May 28 and June 18.
A mailbox was stolen from a home in the 4500 block of 84th Avenue S.E. on the morning of June 16, while the victim told police that two of her neighbor’s mailboxes were stolen two days earlier.
MIPs
Police confiscated about 180 beers from an 18-year-old Islander who told police that his older friend had purchased the alcohol for him on the evening of June 19. According to the police report, someone saw a juvenile purchase a large amount of alcohol. Police located the young man and later found his 26-year-old friend who admitted to buying the beer.
Police arrested another underage Islander for being drunk around 10:15 p.m. in the 7500 block of S.E. 29th Street on June 17. According to the police report, the 16-year-old was contacted by police during a field investigation and could smell alcohol on the teen’s breath. During the arrest, police also found and confiscated a glass marijuana pipe.
Red Herring
Police arrested a man with the last name Herring at the Island’s courthouse around 11:45 a.m. on June 17 for having an outstanding misdemeanor warrant from the county for violating recreational fishing laws. Police transported the man to the county jail.
Lost
A 30-year-old Peruvian woman staying in Seattle notified Mercer Island police that she had lost her passport, social security card, green card and Hawaiian identification card on June 3.
