Portion of East Mercer Way still closed due to small landslide

The 5600 block of East Mercer Way remains closed in both directions at post time following a small landslide that occurred on the shoulder below the guardrail on Nov. 28. A reopening date has not been set, and ongoing investigations into the cause will continue this week, according to the city.

On Saturday, members of the city’s fire, public works and police departments responded to the landslide, of which the cause is unknown. Members of Puget Sound Energy were also on scene and replaced a leaning power pole. The roadway was temporarily closed overnight pending further inspection.

The decision to partially close the road was made after review and assessment by the city’s geotechnical engineer early Sunday. The city plans to put temporary signals in place to allow alternating one-way traffic, and then determine the necessary repair work.

Public works crews installed plastic sheeting on Sunday morning to protect the hillside, and utility crews were also onsite. Detour and closure signs remain in place.
