A new weather system is working it’s way into the Puget Sound area later this week, bringing in the possibility of the first snow showers of the year.

The National Weather Service has issues a special weather statement that covers most of the area.

A new cold weather system, coming in from Alaska is forecasted to bring in cold temperatures and showers, which could turn into a mix of snow and rain on Friday.

Thursday, rain is likely with a high of 41 degrees, while Friday rain and snow showers are expected, with the snow level dropping. The rain and possible snow is expected to continue through Friday night, into Saturday morning with a high around 37.

Little to no snow accumulation is expected.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has said the mountain passes on Wednesday, Nov. 16 could get up to 2 feet of snow, with snow forecasted in the mountains throughout the rest of the week. Both Chinook and Cayuse passes are now closed for the winter because of heavy snowfall and avalanche danger. The North Cascade Highway 20 route has been temporarily close because of heavy snow forecasted for the next several days.

Crystal Mountain ski area is set to open with limited operations this weekend, while Mount Baker Ski Area could possibly open.
