King County Elections certified the results of the primary on Aug. 17 and six Mercer Islanders will now move on to the general election on Nov. 2.

In the race for school district board director position No. 2, Brian Giannini Upton (2,659 votes, 37.72%) and Dan Glowitz (2,544 votes, 36.09%) advance. Elle Nguyen had 1,230 votes for 17.45% and Janelle Lucero had 609 votes for 8.64%.
In the race for school district board director position No. 4, Deborah Lurie (3,675 votes, 53.33%) and Lacey Aaker (1,971 votes, 28.60%) advance. Joanna Sheppard had 1,211 votes for 17.57%.
Giannini Upton and Glowitz are the latest candidates to submit statements to the Reporter following other candidates’ comments in recent stories.
“The last year and a half has been intense with so many critical issues surfacing, and persistent inequities being magnified,” said Giannini Upton. “I am so grateful for the outpouring of support from friends and colleagues. I know that together we can ensure each child is able to recover and reignite their love for learning.”
Glowitz noted: “As a first-time candidate, running for office has been exciting, energizing, and, at times, a little frightening. But, more than anything, it’s been heartening to hear from people in our community, to see their passion, and to recognize that we all share a common goal: to provide the best public education possible on Mercer Island. I believe the primary results show that people believe that our schools can go from good to great and that new ideas and new voices are the way to accomplish that.”
Also in the general election, Salim Nice and Daniel Becker will compete for city council position No. 2 and Ted Weinberg and Michael D. Curry will compete for city council position No. 4.
Ballots will be mailed on Oct. 13 and drop boxes will open on Oct. 14.
