Two cars were prowled during a Sunday morning service at St. Monica Catholic Church on Jan. 9. The prowler broke through the passenger window in a Honda minivan during the 9:30 a.m. service and stole a purse that had been left on the passenger seat. A purse was also stolen from a Lexus, which was broken into through a rear window. Pry damage was done to the window frames of both vehicles.
Stolen items included a copy of the Constitution, keys, currency, a check book, address book, project notes, personal calendars, a driver’s license and AAA, credit and medical cards, perfume and various gift cards.
The prowler then went to Luther Burbank Park and broke into a third car, a Chevrolet Aveo, in the north parking lot between 10:30 and 11 a.m. at 2040 84th Ave. S.E. There were three witnesses of the incident. The prowler broke through a window and stole a purse from the passenger seat, doing “substantial” damage to the window frame. The purse contained keys, a check book, stamps, bills and a wallet with bank, insurance and credit cards, cash and other items.
Jan. 5
Theft: A woman, 42, reported at 4:32 p.m. that her cell phone was stolen from a facility’s gym room in the 2700 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The theft occurred sometime on Dec. 30 or 31.
Fender-bender: A vehicle was rear-ended at 8:10 a.m. in the 3200 block of Island Crest Way after stopping abruptly to avoid hitting a pedestrian in a crosswalk. No injuries were reported.
Jan. 6
Accident: A vehicle slid off a wet roadway and demolished a stop sign at 7 p.m. in the rain at the intersection of 86th Avenue S.E. and S.E. 45th Street. The driver, a 17-year-old boy, braked at approximately 25 mph while turning and lost control of the car.
Hit and run: A Mercedes-Benz was struck by an unknown vehicle while parked between 8 and 9:30 p.m. at Mercer Island High School in the 9100 block of S.E. 42nd Street. Damage to the car’s front end included a dented hood, scratches and a loose, broken grille.
Jan. 7
Theft: A bicycle worth $600 was reported as stolen at 10:56 a.m. It belonged to a 15-year-old boy who claimed that it was stolen outside of McDonald’s on Dec. 31.
Abandoned vehicle: An abandoned car in the 6500 block of 81st Avenue S.E. was reported at 3:46 p.m. The car, registered to a resident of Hillsboro, Ore., was inoperable because of front and rear end damage and had been parked there since the summer.
Malicious mischief: An apartment complex door was spray painted and tagged sometime between 5:15 and 6:45 p.m. in the 3200 block of 80th Avenue S.E. The cost of repair is $500.
Accident: A collision occurred at 7:58 p.m. when a car made a U-turn in the intersection of Island Crest Way and S.E. 32nd Street. The vehicle, driven by an 18-year-old Renton resident, cut across the left lane and struck an oncoming vehicle in the right lane of northbound ICW, breaking off the front wheel hub cap and causing probable damage to the vehicle’s driveline.
Jan. 9
Broken window: A bedroom window was broken in a West Mercer Way residence in the 7400 block. A 58-year-old man reported that someone threw a rock at the window.
Jan. 10
Arrest: A Redmond man, 31, was arrested at 10:34 a.m. in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way after being stopped for a traffic offense. He was driving with a suspended license and had two counts of Failure To Appear on record. His pickup was impounded, and he was cited and released at the MIPD.
Accident: A BMW broadsided a Ford pickup at 4:40 p.m. in the intersection of S.E. 28th Street and 80th Avenue S.E. The collision left some debris, and both vehicles were towed from the scene. The pickup driver, who had the right of way though both drivers claimed it, said he saw a “blur” before he was hit. The BMW driver was charged with failing to stop or yield at the intersection. There were no injuries.
Theft: A Trek bicycle was stolen from the Mercer Island Park and Ride, where it was locked up between Jan. 4 and Jan. 8. The owner, a 47-year-old Kirkland resident, reported the theft in the afternoon.
Jan. 11
Arrest: Police arrested a Seattle man, 28, at 3:57 p.m. in the 9000 block of S.E. 40th Street with an outstanding warrant on one of his AKA weapons. He was booked into the King County Jail.
Arrest: A Seattle man, 42, was arrested at 4:20 p.m. in the 2700 block of 80th Avenue S.E. for driving with a suspended license. The driver, who was also the vehicle’s registered owner, also had an outstanding warrant with the Renton Police Department and amount of bail set at $271. He was taken into the custody of Renton police.
