Last Saturday’s annual fall recycling collection event at the city boat launch delivered some impressive numbers. The City’s contractor reported 680 vehicles arrived, carrying a total of 88,257 pounds of discarded material, which averages to 130 pounds each. The event also provided a collection opportunity for Mercer Island Youth and Family Services: attendees donated 1,100 pounds of items for the Food Pantry, and $2,203 in cash. An additional 102 vehicles attended the rainbarrel sale at City Hall.
Some highlights:
• 38,900 pounds of appliances, scrap metal, and electronic equipment
• 7,350 pounds of reusable household goods for Goodwill
• 12,960 household batteries
• 11,020 pounds of confidential paper shredded on site
The City thanks residents for their participation in protecting the environment, and in supporting the Youth and Family Services Food Pantry.
