From Auburn to Zambia and numerous points in between, Rotarians exemplify “Service Above Self.”

On June 13, the extraordinary accomplishments of the 54 clubs around greater King County will be celebrated when Rotary International District 5030 will be honored as recipients of the 2012 Seattle-King County First Citizen Award, at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel.

This year marks only the second time in the award’s 74-year history that an organization has been honored. The previous group winner was Children’s Orthopedic Hospital (now Seattle Children’s Hospital) in 1944. Past recipients also include individuals, couples and families from humanitarian organizations, charitable and educational institutions, arts groups, environmental causes and various civic endeavors. Last year’s recipients were Karen and Jamie Moyer, and in 2010, former U.S. Senator Slade Gorton was selected.

Nearly 3,300 members are part of District 5030.

At the event, Islander David Bobanick, executive director of Rotary First Harvest, will highlight some successes of that innovative hunger relief program.

Since its founding by the University District Club in 1982, Rotary First Harvest estimates that more than 160 million pounds of surplus nutritious food have been distributed.

Bobanick is the president of the Rotary Club of Mercer Island and serves as a governor-appointee on the Interagency Workgroup on Food Systems, and as vice president of the Hunger and Malnutrition Rotarian Action Group.

The Mercer Island Rotary Club was chartered in December 1963. A number of founding members are still active today. The club has more than 150 members.
