Rotary Club of Mercer Island has placed four Mercer Island High School (MIHS) students in the spotlight in April.
Mia Vorkoper, Julian Jay, Sophie Cartwright and Grayson Conder all earned Rotary students of the month status for their outstanding achievements in and out of the classroom.
Instructor Daniela Melgar nominated Vorkoper in the English/drama realm and said, “Mia is one of the most grounded, kind, thoughtful, ethical students I know. She sets a tone for her peers, and always models respect and professionalism. She pours her heart into the things she cares about and she is an absolute delight to have in class.”
Nominated by instructor Larry Bencivengo in the areas of science and sports, the upbeat, spirited and hard-working Jay is said to be, “a leader in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the band. He is currently taking a heavy academic load, including five AP classes.”
Cartwright received her nomination from math instructor Michelle Hayes, who noted, “What sets Sophie Cartwright apart is not only her outstanding academic performance and her impressive extracurricular involvement, but also her remarkable character. She is kind, compassionate, and always willing to lend a helping hand to her peers.”
College and Career Readiness (CCR) courses instructor Lopa Jacob nominated Conder and said, “Grayson exudes positive energy both within the classroom and beyond. Engaged in leadership courses, CCR classes, and diverse community service clubs, Grayson demonstrates empathy, kindness, and willingness to help others.”
