The Rotary Islander of the Month has been awarded to Mercer Island High School students Alyssa Chung and Matthew Sims.
Chung, the daughter of Shan and Cannie Chung, is the post treasurer of the Key Club, Junior State of America president and Senior Service Club member at MIHS. She has also been an MIHS Site Council member. Her community activities include involvement at Harborview Medical Center, Onnuri Church, Seattle Conservatory of Music, InterCP and MI Safe Rides. In her spare time, she plays piano and travels. She plans to attend the University of Washington and enter the dental field.
Sims, the son of Scott and Anne Sims, is a three-time letter on the MIHS swim team, a Senior Service Club member, Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference representative from the class of 2008, BRIDGES leader, Natural Helper and Safe Rides participant at MIHS. He has volunteered in the community as an Eagle Scout and ski instructor. In addition, he built a chapel in New Mexico with his church youth group and represented his church’s youth in choosing a new church rector. He also climbed to the summit of Mt. Rainier. In his spare time, he plays baseball, skis and spends time with his family and friends. He plans to major in mechanical engineering at Washington State University.
