Mercer Island high school students will be collecting used and broken technical equipment for proper disposal on Oct. 25 and 26. The project is part of King County’s Take it Back program, which provides consumers with options for recycling certain wastes and their hazardous components. Students are collecting old cell-phones, computers and computer parts, TVs, microwaves and other electronic equipment — as well as fluorescent light bulbs — to be collected at the Bayley Construction Parking Lot (8005 S.E. 28th St.) next Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Most donations are free except for larger equipment such as monitors and TV screens, which cost around $10 to recycle. Money raised through the project will go toward the Mercer Island Senior Class Safety and Scholarship Fund. For more information, call (206) 940-4611.

Chapman earns academic honors

MIHS graduate Ellie Chapman (Class of 2006), who attends Dartmouth College, was awarded outstanding academic achievement in film studies during her summer 2008 term. Members of Dartmouth can award a student this distinction only when his or her work is sufficiently distinguished to merit recognition. Few receive the honor each term. Chapman is the daughter of William and Frances Chapman of Mercer Island.

Hammond receives degree

MIHS graduate Matthew Hammond (Class of 2004) received a Bachelor of General Studies in economics from the University of Kansas in August. He is the son of Curt and Maureen Hammond. University of Kansas student Allison Browne, also an MIHS graduate, was listed on the school’s honor roll last spring. Browne is a liberal arts undergraduate and daughter of Michael Browne of Mercer Island.
