School district to hold pair of meetings this week / Briefs

The Mercer Island School District will hold a special education parent webinar from 5-6:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at https://mercerislandschools.zoom.us/j/97811874807 and a K-5 webinar on alternative learning options from 4:30-6 p.m. Aug. 20 at https://mercerislandschools.zoom.us/j/97120320376.

In response to a number of inquiries regarding partially enrolling students, homeschooling students and partnering with MISD as a “microschool/pod,” Assistant Superintendent Dr. Fred Rundle will be hosting the webinar. He will take questions from individuals and present information from the Office of Superindendent of Public Instruction and the MISD practices.

* School board meeting set for Aug. 27

The Mercer Island School District will hold its next school board meeting from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 27. The board invites the community to participate in its 2020-21 budget hearing at this time. For link information, visit https://www.mercerislandschools.org/.

Board president Deborah Lurie issued the following statement regarding remote learning:

“On behalf of the board, I want to thank our Island community for giving us so much input on the Opening Schools Plan. The board unanimously supports Superintendent Donna Colosky’s recommendation to begin the year with fully remote learning. Our staff has devoted the entire summer to creating the most robust plan possible while addressing the concerns of our families. This is something we have never done but I am confident with the administration’s intention to continue the Learning Forward teams and to adapt and evolve to meet the needs of our students. We look forward to the time when we can again have students attending school in person, but not until it is considered safe to do so.”
