On behalf of IslandVision and the Mercer Island High School, I thank you for your generous donation toward the first solar panel system installed in the school district.
I would like to give a generous thank you to the Mercer Island chapter of Rotary and the high school club Committee to Save the Earth, as well as the Island residents who have donated thus far to the project.
My senior culminating project was facilitating the installation of a state-of-the-art solar panel system to completely power the MIHS Student Store and marketing department as a demonstration project for advancing sustainability practices in the school district and community. With your help, I have successfully completed my project.
This is not the end; it is just the beginning. Even with my culminating project finished, I am still working hard until graduation to see to it that the solar panel system is the foundation for more projects. In March, in partnership with IslandVision, I received $2,000 from the Mercer Island Community Fund. This money will go toward the extension of the 1.61 kilowatt photovoltaic system.
In these last three months of high school, I plan to use my time devoted toward promoting sustainable practices with the solar cells being the focal point of my hard work. The MICF has put forward a donation large enough to start this process, but only with the help of the community at large will the high school be closer to LEED status. My goal for this second round of fundraising is $10,000. Thank you so much to the MICF for putting forward one-fifth of the goal.
If everyone on the rock used the money spent on coffee for one day, the high school could see a 20 kilowatt solar panel system before the last day of school. A system of this caliber could power more than five homes on the Island — just think of the possibilities. If you would like to donate to the extension project, please make checks payable to the Mercer Island Schools Foundation for the Solar Panel Project. Your support for this project is very much appreciated.
