During Seafair, police contacted 554 vessels and there were 71 BUI arrests, 3 minor in possession arrests, 1 drug arrest, 2 warrants, 12 subjects booked and 32 infractions issued. During the month of July, the Mercer Island Police Department reported 1,130 calls for service, with 28 thefts, 7 burglaries, 1 robbery, 3 cases of simple assault and 1 case of aggravated assault. There were 11 traffic accidents, 8 DUI arrests, 2 hit-and-run accidents, 1 pedestrian accident, 24 criminal traffic citations, 21 parking citations, and 260 total citations. Police made 33 arrests.
Sometime after July 27, someone pried open a door to the Definitive Dance Studio on S.E. 68th Street and stole audio-video equipment and other items. An exercise bar was pulled from the wall. The loss is estimated at $6,000. The burglary was reported on July 30.
July 21
Cyclist hit: A Bellevue woman leaving the South end shopping center hit a 16-year-old cyclist. The cyclist suffered knee and facial injuries; she was not wearing a helmet. The driver was cited for having no proof of liability insurance.
July 23
Rollover: Just after 11 a.m. an Island woman, 52, was the driver of a vehicle that rolled over onto its roof in the 6400 block of East Mercer Way. The driver was outside of the vehicle and uninjured when police arrived. Driver refused sobriety tests. She was taken into custody for DUI. The suspect was processed and provided two breath samples resulting in readings of .152 and .163. She was later released to a sober adult.
July 24
DUI: A 28-year-old Island man was stopped for expired tabs in the 2600 block of 76th Avenue S.E. just after midnight. The odor of intoxicants was detected in the vehicle. The driver admitted having a pitcher of beer and said he “probably drank more than he should have considering he was driving.” He failed a field sobriety test and refused a PBT. He was arrested and processed a the Mercer Island Police Department. His vehicle was towed. He was given a courtesy ride back to his Island apartment.
DUI: At 2:59 a.m. a 26-year-old Vancouver, British Columbia, woman was stopped for speeding, failing to stop at a stop sign and improper lane usage on 76th Avenue S.E. at the I-90 ramp. The officer could smell intoxicants. She failed field sobriety tests. She was arrested for DUI, processed and released to a sober driver. Her vehicle was towed.
July 25
Fraud: An Island woman reported unauthorized charges of $314 had been made to her Visa debit card.
July 26
Counterfeit bill: Someone passed a counterfeit $20 in Starbucks at 7695 S.E. 27th Street.
Burglary: In the evening a home in the 7600 block of West Mercer Way was burglarized. Items taken included an air rifle, a BB gun, vodka, jewelry, cash, a fire safe and a gun. Two vehicles were prowled and the dog at home was injured. The vehicle matched the description of a suspect vehicle in an earlier attempted robbery with a firearm, when a woman at home in the 8200 block of West Mercer Way answered her door to find two men.
July 27
Explosion: At 10:45 p.m. someone blew up a black metal locking type mailbox in the 6500 block of 81st Avenue S.E.
Burglary: A 43-year-old Island woman reported that her house in the 1600 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. was burglarized sometime between July 26 and July 27. A kitchen door had been pried open. The house was ransacked. Jewelry and electronics were stolen.
July 29
Theft: Sometime during the first week of July, someone took the carved wooden street sign identifying “Ridgecrest Lane,” worth $200 to replace, at the intersection of 78th Avenue S.E. and Ridgecrest Lane. The theft was reported at 2:03 p.m.
Arrest: Just before 2 a.m., police stopped a vehicle for expired tabs at the intersection of I-90 and 82nd Place S.E. A WA DOL check showed the driver was driving without a license (third degree) and had an outstanding a Bellevue PD warrant. The driver was arrested. The passenger was not wearing a seat belt and was found to be a missing juvenile. The driver was turned over to the Bellevue PD. The passenger was turned over to her mother, who picked her up at MIPD. The car was towed.
Argument: At 2 p.m. an Island woman at the Mercer Island Thrift Store noted that the person parked next to her was parked over the line. She later returned to the car and got into a verbal argument with the driver. Victim walked away, but returned later to find the driver’s side door of her car with several scratches. The victim did not have a license plate for the suspects car.
Fraud: A 43-year-old Island man reported that someone used his Visa credit card number to make unauthorized charges to his account.
July 30
Car prowl: A family from Houston driving a rental car on their way to SeaTac Airport stopped at Groveland Beach at 11:30 a.m. for a break before they reached their destination. They had all of their luggage in their vehicle. They returned to find the left rear window of the car shattered and a backpack and a wallet missing. Police found a broken glass marijuana pipe on the ground next to the car. Police took fingerprints from the vehicle.
July 31
DUI: At 2 a.m. a 23-year-old Seattle man was arrested at the corner of S.E. 26th Street and 84th Avenue S.E. for an equipment violation on the car he was driving. He was found to be intoxicated and was arrested. He was released to a sober friend. His vehicle was towed.
Lost purse: A brown leather Fossil handbag was found in the roadway in the 3500 block of East Mercer Way. It was empty.
Lost glasses
A pair of prescription glasses with tortoise shell and purple colored frames were lost last month. The glasses were lost between the neighborhood of Island Point and the South end QFC. If you have seen them or picked them up, please call Leah at 232-0179.
