MIFC Etreme wins Mayors Cup

The BU-17 MIFC Xtreme along with the BU-18 MIFC Renegades guest players won the Sammamish Mayors Cup tournament under-18 bracket.

The hard fought playoff game tied, followed by two 5-minute overtime sessions and ended in a 5-4 shoot-out.

Islander wins Arthur Ashe Essay Contest

The USTA today announced that Islander Zach Elliot, 14, is one of the winners of the tenth annual USTA/NJTL Arthur Ashe Essay Contest. He is among 10 honorees nationwide out of the 2,300 that entered.

Elliot and the other winners, who range in age between 10 and 18, will receive a travel package from Aug. 22-24 that includes: round-trip coach airfare to New York City for themselves and a guardian; two nights lodging at the New York Grand Hyatt Hotel; an honorary plaque; lunch with former New York City Mayor and current USTA Board Member David Dinkins; two tickets to a New York Mets baseball game against the Houston Astros; tickets to Broadway’s “The Lion King;” and tickets to 2008 Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day presented by Hess on August 23 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day is the official kick-off for the 2008 U.S. Open that runs Aug. 25 – Sept. 7.

The USTA/NJTL Arthur Ashe Essay Contest was open to children 18 or younger. Each participant had to write an essay responding to the question “How do you exemplify Arthur Ashe?” A USTA sub-committee selected the winning essays based on the author’s knowledge of Arthur Ashe, message clarity, and writing style.
