Mercer Island boys fall to Mount Si
Facing the league’s second-place team for the first time this season, the Mercer Island boys basketball team stumbled and fell to Mount Si, 69-61, last Tuesday.
The Islanders jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, but the pace and the Wildcats offense could not be contained. Mount Si held a 33-25 lead going into halftime. In the third quarter, Mercer Island held the Wildcats to 21 points, while they scored 18 of their own, but it wasn’t enough to gain the lead, despite a fourth quarter surge.
Quinn Sterling led the team with 19 points, while Kaj Sherman put up 16 points for the Islanders. Brian Miller had 11; Gabe Fruchter, seven; Eric Stefanchik, four; and Parker Scott added three.
Girls basketball narrowly pushes past Mount Si
For a few minutes on Wednesday night in the Mount Si gym, it looked like the Wildcats might get the upset of their season, taking down the league’s top team. But the Mercer Island girls basketball team snatched the victory back and held on to win 51-50.
It came down to the last few minutes of the game for the Islanders, who — despite several lead changes in the third quarter — trailed heading into both halftime and the fourth quarter of the game. After a failed Mount Si basket in the last second, which would have given the Wildcats the upper hand, Mercer Island earned its sixth league win to stay undefeated in KingCo matches.
Hailey Gullstad had 17 points during the close call game, while teammates Jae Shin and Hannah Lilly each had 10 points. Senior Kate DaPron finished with six points, while Sarah Taylor had four. Mount Si’s Hailey Edding finished the game with 15 points, and Stevie Riley had 12 for the Wildcats.
