Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship application period open in honor of Mercer Island alumna

Apply by Feb. 29 for scholarship named after President Barack Obama's mother.

Calling all 2016 graduating senior women: the application period is now open for this year’s Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship. Forms are available in the counseling office at Mercer Island High School (MIHS) and online at www.stanleyanndunhamfund.org. New this year is the opportunity to submit your application online through www.thewashboard.org.

Dr. Dunham, the mother of President Barack Obama, was a 1960 graduate of Mercer Island High School.

It was here, during her four years of high school, where she learned to think independently and developed a compassion for helping others.

She went on to become an anthropologist and worked to improve the lives of women and families in marginalized communities around the world.

The Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 by a group of Mercer Islanders and former schoolmates to honor her memory, the education she received at MIHS, her commitment to service and her kind and generous spirit.

A $5,000 college scholarship will be awarded to a female student currently enrolled in the senior class at MIHS who demonstrates a passion and commitment to the value and goals embodied in the life and work of Dunham.

Application materials must be received by Feb. 29. A public ceremony will be held at the Congregational Church on Mercer Island on May 21 to recognize all the applicants and announce the scholarship winner.

This year’s guest speaker will be Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, President Obama’s sister.
