Jewelry made by five Mercer Island High School students is on show at the Seattle Art Museum this week. The work is part of the 2008 Passing the Torch exhibition, a statewide high school jewelry and metal show put on by the Seattle Metals Guild.

This year, five students in MIHS jewelry teacher Cyndy Jensen’s class submitted their artwork for the month-long exhibit, open now through June 8. Islanders Kelly Ogishima, Jordan Esfeld, Claire Goetschel, Jeremy Song and Yoon Ji Cho each have a unique piece of work showing at the Seattle Art Museum.

“It’s a gorgeous display,” Jensen said.

Most of the art is jewelry, although Ogishima submitted a small, rustic-looking “Treasure Chest” as her project. Esfeld soldered a ring with a miniature “camera” as the pendant. The piece is called “The Memory Ring.” Song’s piece, “Sheet Music,” a silver bracelet decorated with guitar picks, was especially creative, commented Jensen.

Juniors Goetschel and Cho crafted a delicate bracelet, entitled “Garden Party,” and a chain necklace, entitled “Soul of an Anchor,” respectively.

This is the third year that MIHS students have participated in the Passing the Torch exhibit. Their work can be found on the first floor of the Seattle Art Museum, and viewing is free to the public.
