In the past two weeks, Islanders and community members throughout the Eastside have rallied around the family of Jonathan Stevenson, a 17-year-old who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on 111th Street N.E. in Redmond.

Jonathan and his family lived on Mercer Island until 10 years ago and are now Sammamish residents. Dan Stevenson is the director of faith at St. Monica Church.

“People’s prayer support is extremely important,” Stevenson said. “We’ve seen it.”

On the evening of May 29, Dan, Jonathan and his brother went for a motorcycle ride together. Jonathan was injured when his bike hit a curb and he was thrown, Dan Stevenson said.

The police officers who investigated the scene thought that excessive speed caused the crash, but there may be more to the story, Stevenson said.

Jonathan was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he remains in serious condition, a spokeswoman said.

Doctors kept Jonathan sedated for about a week to allow the swelling in his brain to subside. He has recognized family members and wiggled his toes, Dan Stevenson said.

“I attribute that to everyone’s prayers,” Stevenson said. “Every bit of this has been a miracle.”
