Laurels & Orchids to:
Mercer Island’s Public Safety Police and Fire who responded effectively and cooperatively to so many Island citizens in need, roadside or otherwise.
North-end QFC for a wonderfully cleared parking lot.
Salvation Army bucket tenders Bruce Clibborn and many others.
U.S. Postal Service, FedEx and UPS drivers and helpers who bravely hiked down and up ghastly driveways so devotedly.
Skunk Cabbage Awards reluctantly to:
McDonald’s for no parking lot clearing whatsoever, making a slushy mess.
Mercer Island Roads & Engineering Department for not snowplowing 68th in an easterly direction from the intersection of Island Crest Way.
The unnamed (mercifully) Island government official who, when asked about snowplowing Avalon, blankly responded: “Isn’t that a private road?”
Whoever made the alleged policy stated by Recycle Center attendant that the Recycle Center parking area could not be plowed (it would have taken about 60 seconds) because the SlushBowl was “school property,” not city property.
Hoping for more nominees to the Reporter.
