Well-manicured ‘sexy stubble’ has its allure, as do clean-shaven, baby-soft cheeks. Men can have either at Au Courant’s newest addition, The Den. The man-cave nook offers a place where men can relax and enjoy spa services tailored to their needs away from the traditional, woman-dominated salon-style atmosphere.
Aside from the standard hair cut and blow dry, The Den offers a complete package of traditional barber shop services including straight-razor shaves and hot towel wraps.
Sports games in progress flash across three flat screen TVs and moss-green paint, cherry cabinets, Rat Pack-inspired artwork, and black marble counters add to the “man cave” feel. Welcome to The Den.
Patrons over 21 can enjoy an adult beverage during their appointment, while younger clients may choose from soda, juice, or water.
Last week, Jakob and Kaleb Lewis, 7 and 10, watched sports and sipped rootbeer in The Den while getting their summer clips.
“The Den is where men can be men. Even young men,” said Barb Hovsepian, who owns Au Courant with her husband Allen.
Lifelong Island residents Barb and Allen bought the 40-year-old salon earlier this year. The next remodel phase will include the work and shampoo stations, she said.
The Den also offers a complimentary baby’s “first haircut” and teen’s “first shave”. A few weeks ago the parents of a 15-week-old boy with a head full of hair took them up on the offer, but so far no teens have come in for their first shave, Barb said.
Straight-razor shaves are popular for nostalgic reasons and the close shave, she said, but it is also a great way for a man to kick back, relax and pamper himself.
“It’s an old fashioned service in a modern society,” she said.
