Update from the city: The May 17 closure of the northbound Interstate 405 to eastbound Interstate 90 ramp has been postponed and will now take place overnight on May 31.
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will conduct several necessary Interstate 90 ramp closures for bridge deck repairs in May that will impact traffic flow on Mercer Island.
Here is the trio of scheduled closures on the docket:
From 10 p.m. on May 17 to 5 a.m. on May 18, the ramp from northbound Interstate 405 to eastbound I-90 will be closed.
From 10 p.m. on May 19 to 5 a.m. on May 22, the ramp from Bellevue Way Southeast to eastbound I-90 and I-405 will be closed. The westbound I-90 HOV ramp will also be closed.
From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly on May 23 and May 24, both the northbound and southbound I-405 ramps to eastbound I-90 will be closed.
The city will share individual travel alerts with more detail leading up to each closure, during which vehicles needing to access eastbound I-90 will be detoured onto westbound I-90 toward Mercer Island, where they will then exit at East Mercer Way and re-enter eastbound I-90.
“The city immediately began collaborating with WSDOT, the Washington State Patrol, and our neighboring cities once these closures were announced. We are working with these agencies to emphasize ample signage, public notification, clear detouring, and traffic management support. The city has also added additional staffing across our police department and is working to deploy local traffic control measures to help keep Island streets clear,” reads a city report.
